118. Are there really self-educated geniuses from the streets like in Good Will Hunting?

Of course there are. Back in the late 1990’s, possibly inspired by the success of “Good Will Hunting”, reporters began looking around for someone like the character. It seems that they found me, after which I appeared on every major television network in North America and many others abroad.

I’ve never met anyone involved with the movie, and I’m sure that none of the cast or producers had ever heard of me. So what made people think that I was something approaching a real-world template for the movie character? Well, I had a rough home life growing up. I barely have a high school diploma – they didn’t even want to give me one of those – but I can make almost any professional academic look like a dunce at will. I’ve worked as a cowboy, construction worker, firefighter, and fisherman, and I was perhaps the best-known bar bouncer in the Greater New York area for 25 years. I was the first person ever to solve the venerable chicken-or-egg problem (my solution is the one for which somebody else is credited anew every two or three years). I’m even the author of the CTMU, the one and only viable theory of mathematical metaphysics.

Despite all that, I’m sure that most people have no idea who I am. I don’t really care, as I’ve always been a private person (the press always contacted me, never vice versa). But if I had to guess at the reasons, there are at least three that I might consider. One is Academia, which runs a closed shop and monopolizes scientific communication and intellectual commerce to the complete exclusion of outsiders. Another is that IQ has been deconstructed and democratized until everyone and his dog thinks of himself or herself as a genius. (Everyone deserves to be respected for his or her special intellectual attributes, but I suspect that many people have gone a little overboard in the self-esteem department these days.) Yet another is that I’m a White male who dared to use the forbidden G-word (God) when questioned about what I believed, and was mercilessly disparaged and defamed by every half-baked atheistic troll on the planet in revenge for my theological opinions.

119. Is Christopher Langan the smartest person in the world?

I agree with the idea, more or less stated in another comment, that being smart and having a high IQ are not necessarily equivalent properties. But this makes judging intelligence all the more difficult. To be judged extraordinarily intelligent, one must communicate extraordinary thoughts to those doing the judging. But this raises a vexing issue: as any really intelligent person knows, communication is always a two-way street. This is not only because communication consists of at least two people exchanging information, but because each must understand what the other is saying. Unfortunately, extraordinary thoughts are often extraordinarily hard for most people to understand.
